Clockwork Edwardian Dress and Hat

About this time, I was really starting to get the hang of sculpties. I had used one small for a part in my Clockwork Brain but that was a simple shape that was very close to radial symmetry. Next I wanted to try something a little more challenging.

Inspired by Paradise Kiss and Gunnm, I decided to devlop a fancy Edwardian lady’s outfit with a bustle. The look, I felt, should suit the clockwork automaton and be made of the same metals. Together, they create the look of a refined robot lady of the late 1800’s who would be equally at home sipping a teacup of oil with friends or popping out of a huge clock once an hour.

This outfit featured a sculpted wide brim hat, a large bustle in the style of an automobile trunk (perhaps for storage of junk), a tight skirt which flared at mid-calf, and large sculpted shoulder pieces that merged mechanical design with the leg-of-mutton sleeves of the Edwardian period. Those shoulder pieces were some of my first successful sculpts which were not at all radially symmetrical.

The combined effect was very striking and elegant but the tight skirt introduced a problem which led to my next creation…
